Fidelity’s G-PoS and Total Control with Stock maximises profitability in the shops & bars

Leeds is among the top ten universities for research in the UK and is internationally acknowledged as a centre of excellence in a wide range of academic and professional disciplines. During a typical academic year there are over 30,000 students and 8000 staff.

During the summer of 2007, Fidelity where invited by the Student Union to put forward a proposal to replace both the  existing Web based Point of Sale (POS)  and the back office (BOS) software. The main criteria being that as much of the existing hardware as possible was to be re-used and the complete system had to be fully operation by the start of the September semester.

The union operate eight hospitality and five retail outlets with a total of 50 touch screen based pos units. Fidelity personnel worked closely with Managers and the IT dept to create the new system.  One thing which helped the situation was that many of the staff had previous experience with Fidelity’s back office software, Total Control. The existing system, being web based had utilised many wireless routers throughout the estate and these had to be replaced by conventional switches. The hospitality screens where designed initially, followed by the retail screens. This again was no mean task because the hospitality outlets, being a mix of both food and drink had differing products. Similarly the retail outlets also had differing products. Luckily, G-POS, Fidelity’s touch screen software, lends itself to this task easily and Fidelity’s experience of installing at 50 other universities again helped with the customisation of the screens to suit all areas.

Fidelity’s Total Control with Stock software was utilised as the BOS for both the retail and hospitality.

The system was complemented by eighteen chip and pin terminals utilising the Yes Pay Emboss system.

The whole new EPoS system was fully operational for the start of trading in September.

As all software supplied by Fidelity is written in house, we had the capability to give the Union exactly what it required. Most off the shelf EPoS software will only give around 80% of the functionality a customer requires – with the Fidelity solution this rises to 100%.
